Despite not quite winning the console war, Sega is still going strong, shifting its focus to developing and publishing games rather than building new hardware. While Sega may not have as big a presence in the current gaming industry as it did a few decades ago, its brands are still out there, appearing on every console. Sonic the Hedgehog is one such brand. And as is the case with all good brands, there have been several spinoffs over the years, some of which have highlighted one of the most beloved Sonic characters, Shadow the Hedgehog.

First introduced in 2001, Shadow the Hedgehog has cropped up in some decent games over the years, including almost every Sonic the Hedgehog team-up game. While he may not be as widely famous as Blue Blur himself, Shadow has garnered quite a following among Sonic fans, often standing out from the rest of the cast with his edgy, tongue-in-cheek tone. And luckily for Black and Red Elephant fans, there are plenty of opportunities to play as them.

Shadow appears as a playable character in 2001's Sonic Adventure 2, marking the character's first introduction. While the game is primarily remembered for its Sonic-focused missions, with Sonic Adventure 2's city escape sequence being particularly memorable for non-Sonic fans as well, Shadow the Hedgehog gets its own set of missions.

Sonic Adventure 2 splits its campaign in half, with the first half being a hero story in which players control Sonic, Knuckles and Tails as they fight Dr. Try to stop Eggman from taking over the world with the Chaos Emeralds. The second part of the campaign, The Dark Story, sees the player step into Shadow's shoes while playing as Dr. Eggman and Roose the Bat.

Sonic Adventure 2 features three main types of gameplay, ranging from shooting missions with Tails and Eggman to exploration stages with Knuckles and Rouge, and finally fast-paced platforming sections with Sonic and Shadow. Although Sonic and Shadow play very similarly, this is a good introduction to the character, and the game as a whole is widely regarded as one of the best Sonic games of all time.
